I have always believed that in the greatest of trials one finds the presence of God - if we can remember to be watchful for God's presence, which is sometimes difficult through tears. One of the most memorable times for me was witnessing a daughter bring her terminally ill father to a Sidewalk service, and seeing him accept God. He had never believed in the existence of the Holy, but through both his illness and his daughter's witness, his heart was opened.

During times of pain, I find God in the love of those around me, including family, friends, and co-workers.

To be perfectly honest, it's pretty hard to find God when I'm in pain. Often God seems silent, or out to lunch! But, it has happened that just about the time I feel like I'm losing it, I hear a story, or think of a biblical character, that mirrors my experience and my pain. God's reassuring whisper can come to me in that round-about way.

I too find God in the love of people around me when I am in painful moments. Once I was feeling isolated as my family was 2000 miles away. Money was so tight that the next step would have been bankruptcy. Where was God? We made too much money for the food bank, but after paying the mortgage, utility bills, and unsecured credit accounts there was no money for food. We have an organization feeding the homeless and poor five days a week at our church, and they opened their cupboards and freezers to give us needed food. God not only supplied our need of food, but gave us open and non-judgemental arms to hug us.
