Sharing the Light
Read Matthew 5:13-16
Paul wrote, "I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that lived first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, lives in you."
-2 Timothy 1:5 (NRSV)
WE all know special people who serve as lights in our journey of faith. For many in my family, one of those people is my Grandma Ruth. She has passed down the importance of daily devotional reading and how it enriches our most important relationship - our relationship with God.
Grandma Ruth was a young girl during the Great Depression. She remembers one Sunday when her minister told them about a new publication. He explained that it was a daily devotional guide and could be purchased for five cents per copy. Grandmother Ruth thought this must be a special book to cost so much. She was amazed when at the end of the service her father walked up to the minister, took out a nickel, and bought her family's first copy of The Upper Room.
Grandma Ruth has not kept this special publication to herself - nor the wisdom she has learned from over 70 years of reading it. When I recently moved across the country, she immediately sent me a copy of The Upper Room in case my mail was not forwarded in a timely manner. She didn't want me to miss even one day's devotional. Through her actions and living faith, Grandma Ruth shares her light with everyone - and we are all richer for it.

Thank you, God, for the lights in our journey of faith. Help us, in turn, to be lights for others. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Leave a light on for those who will follow.
