One with Christ, One with Each Other, One in Ministry to All the World

Sharon Scobie, General Conference Lay Delegate

I have been part of the Methodist Church since my baptism. During my childhood I attended Sunday School, sang in various choirs, was a member and officer of the MYF, was confirmed as a member of the church, and served as secretary to our pastor.

During college, I was very active in Wesley Foundation which played an extremely important part in my life.  Most of my close friends, including my husband, were part of this group. I served as secretary and then president of this group.

I joined United Methodist Women in the 70's and have served in various leadership positions on the local level since that time. On the district level, I have served as secretary of program resources, treasurer, and president. On the conference level, I have served as secretary, president, and am currently serving as Assistant Dean for the School of Christian Mission.

While we lived in Maryland, I was involved in the church by singing in the choir, directing a youth choir, serving as Sunday School secretary and teacher, secretary and then chair of the church council.

In addition to church involvement, I was a very active Cub Scout leader and trainer.  All four of our sons became Eagle Scouts.  As a trainer, I completed Wood Badge training and received the District Award of Merit.

While working at Carroll Community College in Westminster, Maryland for ten years, I was honored to receive the Teacher of the Year award.

I currently attend Desert Spring UMC in Las Vegas where I sing in the choir, serve on the library committee and church council. I have been financial secretary of United Methodist Social Ministries (UMSM), an outreach ministry of the churches in Las Vegas for five years and am currently the Interim Executive Director

My husband and I have been married 43 years. We have four sons, two living in Las Vegas, and two on the East Coast.  We have five grandsons and four granddaughters, one deceased.

This is my first time serving as lay delegate to General Conference. I look forward to the experience and thank you for giving me this opportunity.
