Rolland Loomis (Rolly)

Rolland (Rolly) Loomis was on staff at Saint Francis in the Foothills United Methodist Church in Tucson, Arizona for 7 1/2 years before coming to the Desert Southwest Conference Staff.. There he served as a Lay Pastor of Family Ministries and Missions and oversaw Children's Ministries, Outreach Ministries, Local and Foreign Missions and also acted as the Church Administrator and performed other pastoral duties as well. Rolly specialized in developing multimedia to support worship as well as other ministries of Saint Francis.
Rolly worked for several years as a consultant to the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference. There he served as Media Director for annual conference meetings, overseeing PowerPoint, Video, Sound, Television and Staging. Rolly assembled a team of Youth to perform many of these functions. In many case these young people brought these skill back to their local churches. He also worked with the worship design team, designing worship services for the Annual Conference. He also assisted local churches in building effective multimedia for use in worship.
Before being called to professional Ministry, Rolly was the President of I. N. Loomis and Sons, Inc. a family business that constructed Highways, Bridges and a variety of Precast Concrete products including Reinforced Concrete Pipe. He also served on various professional organization boards, including as Vice President of the Associated Pennsylvania Constructors and as President of the Pennsylvania Concrete Pipe Association.
Rolly has dedicated a great portion of his life in service to the homeless, the marginalized, the poor, and those affected by HIV/AIDS in the USA and in Africa. Recently he has been working closely with Dr. Barbara Eiswerth to advocate for refugees from many areas of the world, including Sudan, Somalia, Burundi, Bhutan and Uganda as well as several other countries. In June of 2009 they traveled together to Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya where they were able to listen to and record the stories of many people living in that place. He is still in the process of producing and editing video documentaries that he will use in his work to shine a light on the people living in Kakuma. Rolland uses many of those resources in workshops including the UMW Christian School of Mission. He has recently written a video based curriculum called, "Refugee Studies" which highlights the work of The United Nations High Commission for Refugees.
Rolly traveled to Nigeria on three occasions representing his churches and The United Methodist Church in General. In 2001 he traveled with a team from Eastern Pennsylvania to establish a Partnership with the Nigeria Annual Conference. In 2002 he led a Medical Team to the Rural Health Program in Zing, Nigeria. In 2006 Rolly helped establish an HIV/AIDS Initiative in Zing, Nigeria in cooperation with the Rural Health Program of the United Methodist Church, Nigeria. This cooperative has been able to train 30 HIV/AIDS counselors, establish and support an HIV/AIDS office with a full time director and help establish an organization that is now supported with Nigeria Government funds and recently received an UMCOR grant. The clinic serves the people of Taraba State with HIV/AIDS counseling, testing and treatment.
Rolly is currently the Co-Chair of the Southern Sudan School Foundation, a ministry of Saint Francis in the Foothills UMC. The Foundation is active in drilling wells and building schools in Southern Sudan. To see more go to: http://southsudanschools.com
