Men’s Fall Renewal Retreat

Larry Malone, one of the leading names in men’s ministry in the UMC and Director of Men’s Ministry for the GCUMM, will be our guest speaker at this year’s Renewal Retreat for men in the Desert Southwest Conference – October 2-4 at United Christian Youth Camp in Prescott, Arizona.

“Flight Quest” will be a powerful retreat experience – combining stories from tactical aviation with personal stories and powerful music that reaches and connects with men of all ages.

Fly as God’s wingman. “They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength and mount up with wings as eagles.” Isaiah 40:31 “Two ready-alert jets launch, ascending in a supersonic afterburner climb -- they are armed to the teeth, and headed for targets deep in enemy territory.  Christ is flying lead, and you are his trusted wingman.  Your mission is to route enemy defenses, and to replace hate and destruction with love and goodness.  It’s not a mission for wimps; you have to die to earn your wings…”

A former pilot during the Vietnam War, Larry Malone keeps a sword in his Nashville office as a reminder of that chapter in his past. He says he is now engaged in the battle for men’s souls.

Larry considers men’s hearts to be the “last frontier” to be explored and imagines -- and works for  -- a church that is heavily populated with men who resemble Jesus in thought, word and deed.

As a pilot, Malone flew the A-6 Intruder in the Vietnam War, and had assignments on the USS Enterprise and USS America during the 1970’s. In 1997 he felt called to men’s ministry and joined the staff of the general commission. He is also the president of the World Methodist Council’s men’s affiliate; and is active in leadership within the National Coalition of Men’s Ministries, and the Denominational Men’s Ministry Network of North America.

National Gathering

National Gathering of UM Men to have Tennessee flavor
Vince Gill and Steve Hornbeak to sing at July event

NASHVILLE, Tenn.––For the past 36 years, UM Men have held their quadrennial gatherings at Purdue University in Lafayette, Ind.

When the General Commission on UM Men moved their 10th National Gathering to Nashville, music for the event took on a distinctively Nashville flavor.

Vince Gill and Steve Hornbeak, two Nashville-based recording artists, will perform at the July 10-11, 2009, assembly at Belmont University. They will be joined by Sheltered Reality, a national youth percussion band that includes youngsters from a Nashville inner-city church.

Paul Saik, a well known vocalist and pianist from the Nashville Area, will serve as the music leader. He recently released a live recording of hymns recorded at Brentwood (Tenn.) United Methodist Church.

Richard Alegria, former president of the Rio Grande Conference United Methodist Men, will serve as organist for the event. This will be his seventh men’s national gathering.

Speakers at the event will include Chicago Area Bishop Hee-Soo Jung; Dr. Patrick Morley, founder of Man in the Mirror ministries; and the Rev. Kevass Harding, pastor of a Wichita, Kans., congregation that grew from 25 members to more than 800 in eight years.

While the event officially closes Saturday, July 11, persons staying over in Nashville may attend a July 12 morning worship service led by Bishop William W. Morris, a retired UM bishop residing in the Nashville area.
